Giving an opinion

1

Look at the photos. What do you think it would be like to go on the slide?

Look at the photos of the ArcelorMittal Orbit Slide. Then build your answer below.

Pick up to 2 words
I think it would be … .
Finish your idea
Talk about it
  1. Would you like to go on it? Why / Why not?
  2. What could be good about it? What could be bad?
  3. What's the most exciting ride you've ever been on?
Did you know? The Orbit is a giant red sculpture in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. It was built for the 2012 Olympics. The slide twists around the tower many times on the way down.
Teacher · 4–5 min. Show the photos first. Elicit/pre-teach tunnel slide, twist, views, crowded, queue. Push for a reason after "because". The prediction is saved and shown again after the video in Task 2.

Your prediction
Was the slide like you thought? Who do you agree with more – Logan or Mae?
Teacher · 3–4 min. One gist viewing only. Answer: Mae. Ask "How do you know?" – accept tone of voice, facial expression, "I really loved it". Then compare with the student's prediction.

Watch again. Then complete the dialogue with the words in the box.

Tap a word, then tap a gap. Tap a filled gap to take the word back.

Teacher · 6–8 min. Let the student try before the second viewing, then watch to check. Key: 1 brilliant · 2 exciting · 3 disappointing · 4 amazing · 5 boring. Clue for 3 & 5: Logan's ride was "over so quickly" (negative); Mae "thought it might be…but it was the best bit" (contrast). Quick follow-up: Why was Logan's visit worse? (crowded, waited for ages).
